CIE-MAP Presents at Ecobuild 2018

On the 8 March 2018, Jannik Giesekam, Research Fellow, Centre for Industrial Energy, Materials and Products (CIE-MAP), presented at the Ecobuild 2018 conference in London.

The conference session ‘Sustainability report for the UK built environment – doing well or could do better?’ was inspired by a recent UKGBC project gathering indicators of sustainability in the UK built environment, to which CIE-MAP contributed. The session was chaired by Julie Hirigoyen, chief executive of UKGBC. Other speakers included Adrian Gault, Committee on Climate Change, Bill Dunster, ZEDfactory, Louise Clarke, Berkeley Group and Stephanie Wray, President of CIEEM.

Preliminary analysis by the UK Green Building Council suggests that the UK Property and Construction sector has a long way to go before it can be considered sustainable. The challenges are not new and ways of tackling them are well known, but the effective action seems to be lacking. What are we doing well? Where could we do better? The cross-industry panel explored the issues with the audience invited to contribute their own suggestions and comments. The session identified key recommendations for action. This session was developed with steering group member UK Green Building Council.

Jannik Giesekam’s presentation highlights current progress in carbon reduction and the changing use of resources in the sector.
